YEREVAN (CoinChapter.com) — Tech YouTuber Lex Fridman conducted a groundbreaking metaverse interview with Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.

The interview, which has caught the attention of the tech community, unveiled the growing capabilities of the company’s metaverse technology. Particularly, it demonstrated Meta’s advanced “codec avatars” created by its Reality Labs division.

The ultra-realistic metaverse avatars of the duo show the immense potential of how people will connect and communicate online.

Anyone following the growth of Decentralized Finance (DeFi), nonfungible tokens (NFTs), and cryptocurrencies knows what a metaverse is. There have been several metaverse projects that have gained popularity. Some of these include Decentraland (MANA), The Sandbox (SAND), Axie Infinity (AXS), and Gala (GALA).

On nearly all Metaverse platforms, users get to create an avatar of themselves. However, the Fridman-Zuckerberg interview was unlike anything we have seen so far.

Their “codec avatars” were so photorealistic that one could easily mistake it for a real video. They were certainly more advanced than the previous cartoonish versions. The internet community had intensively trolled Zuckerberg for the previous silly avatars.

Fridman even pointed out that these avatars appeared remarkably human. It did not hide imperfections like freckles and wrinkles on the person’s face.

“It captures everything. Perfection isn’t what leads to immersion; it’s the little subtle flaws,”

 he emphasized.

This innovative approach left even popular YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, known as MrBeast, surprised and somewhat bewildered.

Mr Beast was amazed by the quality of the codec avatars used for the interview.

As Zuckerberg explained, the codec avatars were created by scanning their faces—the company than compressed the scans into a codec for easy transmission over the Internet. According to the Meta CEO, they are more bandwidth-friendly than video calls.

This development is significant. In August 2022, Zuckerberg faced ridicule for metaverse avatars’ graphics quality. After he shared a screenshot on Facebook, people trolled him to no end.

This recent improvement in avatar quality suggests that Meta is actively addressing these concerns as it continues to develop the metaverse.

Zuckerberg told Fridman that only a select few are currently testing these photorealistic codec avatars. It takes considerable time and resources to scan and convert them.

However, the Meta CEO believes people can create their avatars effortlessly using smartphones.
